Community Built Renewable Supply

Short Description

The village of Meckenbach is part of the Joint Municipality of Birkenfeld. The village is located in a remote rural area in the western part of Germany, Rheinland - Palatinate. The pilot is focused on the technical performance of a decentralised supply of e lectricity supplied by photovoltaics, batteries and a secondary system (e.g. wind turbines).

About the implementation partners

The administration of the joint Municipality of Birkenfeld ( VG Birkenfeld ) and here by of Meckenbach is in charge of the procurement and project management, in particular the conduction of the permitting procedures.

‌Meckenbach provides the land and the finances and organises the communication with the inhabitants of the village .

The Institute for Applied Material Flow Management of Trier ( IfaS ), a higher research institute, is responsible for preplanning, consulting for further planning and procurement and monitoring of results.

The challenge

Commercial and jurisdictional challenges have to be addressed in this pilot to move forward (e.g. the project’s viability in the current regulatory framework).

Renewables-based decentral hybrid energy system (DHES)

Solar and wind energy are the only well - available energy sources for electricity generation at that scale in the region. Batteries are necessary to compensate the difference between production and demand.

Project Financing and Costs

The project will be financed from the municipal budget of Meckenbach and from the Low Carbon Off - grid Communities ( LOGiC ) project, which is 60 % financed by Interreg North - West Europe.

Expected Project Outcome

By the investment in a DHES the energy supply of Meckenbach aims to achieve 100 % renewable supply in the power sector, thus implementing European and national climate protection targets. Additionally , power supply in an economic weak and prone to demographic change region will be secured.

To meet the goal of LOGiC it is essential to exchange experiences and knowledge, please meet us at the following events.
LOGiC to present at G-STIC 2018: Energy Positive Communities (Brussels, 29 November 2018)
As part of GSTIC-2018, LOGiC will present in the session on "energy positive communities".‌
‌The session brings together two worlds: the world of the big energy infrastructures (based on the national energy plans) on one side and the world of the local energy initiatives on the other side. Key Questions addressed include:
- how do the national energy plans take into account those local energy initiatives?
‌- how do national energy plans value the local energy services?
‌- when and where will those two worlds meet each other physically?
‌- which technologies are necessary to make that match?

Site Visit to Texel Island
You are kindly invited on 18 October 2018 to visit the island of Texel, the Netherlands, for a unique site visit to learn and discuss experiences of the Low Carbon Off-Grid Communities (LOGiC) project and other decentralised renewable energy projects in Europe.
